Following Netflix’s abrupt cancellation of Iron Fist, Marvel fans can’t help but worry the status of the rest of the MCU on the platform.
While Netflix subscribers can expect to see Jessica Jones and Daredevil return for third seasons, the fate of their fellow heroes in the MCU, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, hangs in the balance while they await a season renewal or a special crossover on the streaming service.
Other factors? Disney announced plans for its own streaming service, with two new series starring Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). That announcement incited panic over the fate of the entire Netflix Marvel universe.
It seems like fans have little to fret over in regard to Netflix’s MCU for the time being. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told Inverse, “These shows are for us to cancel and we’re super happy with their performance so far.”
While some decisions on the fate of these Marvel properties remain unclear, Sarandos clarified that whether or not the streaming platform will continue to create new Marvel shows is up to them, not Disney.
As of now, we know little about the fate of Netflix’s MCU programming, other than the anticipated episodes coming soon or if another crossover (much like The Defenders) could be in the works for the platform, potentially hinted in Iron Fist‘s cancellation. As the official cancellation for Iron Fist read, “While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.” Clearly, fans can expect to see Danny Rand or Iron Fist perhaps on a different Netflix series sometime in the near future.
