International Women’s Day is all about kick-butt women and female empowerment, so it’s only fitting that Captain Marvel’s theatrical release will be on such an ideal day. Not only will Captain Marvel fly onto the scene then, but a new squad of kick-butt female superheroes unite on the silver screen with the premiere of Cartoon Network’s DC Super Hero Girls.
Premiering March 8, Warner Bros. Animation kicks off the DC Super Hero Girls franchise with the hour-long TV movie DC Super Hero Girls: Sweet Justice, which will lead into the weekly television series on Cartoon Network based on the YouTube series.
A new trailer dropped yesterday, introducing the super-powered girls in the new series and giving us such a bop of a theme song. (If you need me, I’ll be listening to this track all day. ?)
According to the show’s description, “DC Super Hero Girls are more than crime-fighting besties, they’re a diverse group of dedicated super-teens! Working together, they fight the battles of Metropolis and the battles of growing up all at the same time. Always discovering new ways to control their powers and abilities, these awesome girls are quickly learning (sometimes the hard way) how to deal with the super challenges of being a teenage Super Hero.”
Following Sweet Justice, Cartoon Network will air the new series weekly on Sundays at 4 p.m., beginning March 17. Emmy winner Lauren Faust (Super Best Friends Forever, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends) helms the new series featuring illustrated DC heroes, led by Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and Supergirl.
