Academy Award-nominee Octavia Spencer is in talks to join Anne Hathaway in the film adaptation of The Witches, according to Variety.

The adaptation, helmed by Robert Zemeckis, is based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. Further reports, Variety adds, indicate that Black-ish creator Kenya Barris will co-write the script with Zemeckis. Newcomers Jahzir Bruno and Codie-Lei Eastick are also in negotiations to join the cast.

While a previous adaptation starring Anjelica Huston was released in 1990, this film will pull from the novel more heavily, according to reports. The novel tells the story of a young boy (Bruno) and his grandmother (Spencer) as they battle real-life witches, led by the Grand High Witch (Hathaway).
