The Ghostbusters: Afterlife panel at NYCC | Source: Metaverse

Day two of New York Comic Con (NYCC) ended with a surprise screening of Ghostbusters: Afterlife for the hundreds gathered in-person at the Empire Stage.

The panel promised a sneak-peek clip or two and a Q&A with producers Ivan and Jason Reitman (the original Ghostbusters director and his son), along with cast members Finn Wolfhard, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and writer Gil Kenan. After answering some questions and discussing the film, Jason Reitman told the audience that they would be about to view it in its entirety.

“Frankly, my father and I think you’ve waited long enough,” he says, “Please do not spoil it. Please don’t say what happens in the end — you’ll see why soon enough.”

He then told the audience to stick through the end credits and asked for a picture with them. For those viewing the livestream, this is when everything went blank.

Of course, after spending all day at NYCC and then choosing to watch this panel in the comfort of my living room, I was extremely salty at this point. Still, the Q&A portion gave some interesting insight into the making of the film — and, more importantly, the cast members confirmed Paul Rudd is really, truly a vampire whose age is in the triple digits.

We also learned that the cast actually had no idea what they were auditioning for. The casting breakdown simply said it was a movie about a family that inherits a farm. “I ran to my dorm after studying and taped [the audition],” says O’Connor, “When I found out it was Ghostbusters I was like ‘Oh my god. I would have put way more time into that if I had known.'”

The cast is excited for people to finally see the film as it’s been something even they’ve been years for because of delays brought on by the pandemic. For those of us who missed the screening, Ghostbusters: Afterlife premieres only in theaters on Nov. 19. Who ya gonna call?
