Star Wars fans probably didn’t expect to get news of a spinoff movie from Boris Johnson, former foreign secretary from the UK, at the DUP Annual Conference in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Saturday. But with one simple comment, Johnson sent fans into a frenzy.
In an effort to boast about the UK, Johnson mentioned an upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi film that is reportedly in the works at Lucasfilm. Oops.
During his speech, Johnson stated that the UK has, “by far the most dynamic creative culture and media industries.” He then posed the question: “Which was the biggest grossing movie last year? Star Wars. And where does George Lucas propose to make a follow up about Obi-Wan Kenobi? Northern Ireland.”
While George Lucas hasn’t directed a film in the Star Wars franchise since Revenge of the Sith in 2005, he is still the main person associated with the franchise. We can still hope that he’ll return to direct.
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about rumors of an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. Rumors surfaced in May that the spinoff would start filming next spring, but Ewan McGregor shot down those claims.
In the meantime, we’ll continue to look forward to Star Wars: Episode IX, which is set to hit theaters next December.
