Paramount Pictures put production for Star Trek 4 on hold indefinitely, according to CNET.
Director S. J. Clarkson is moving on to direct the prequel series to HBO’s Game of Thrones, according to Deadline. She is the first female director of the sci-fi franchise.
Negotiations for Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth to return in the fourth film installment fell through in August, The Hollywood Reporter said.
However, producer and writer Alex Kurtzman will continue the Star Trek adventure with at least two upcoming animated series.
CBS All Access is set to air a half-hour animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks and two seasons of Star Trek: Short Treks in the spring. Mike McMahan of Cartoon Network’s Rick and Morty is producing the comedy series.
The streaming service will premiere the shows once the second season of Star Trek: Discovery ends. Discovery will return on CBS All Access in the U.S. and Netflix worldwide on Jan. 17.
Star Trek fans can also board the Enterprise with the upcoming Jean-Luc Picard series starring Patrick Stewart, and a Star Trek: Discovery spin-off with Crazy Rich Asians star Michelle Yeoh as the lead.
Plus, producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are working on the Starfleet Academy series.Their work includes creating the Marvel series Runaways for Hulu.
