It feels like ages ago, but the season two finale of Riverdale left fans with Archie (KJ Apa) being framed for murder by none other than Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos). With season three looming just around the riverbend, we now know that the murder trial will conclude by the end of the season premiere rather than dragging out all season.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine that we will find out Archie’s fate in episode one, but that it won’t be smooth sailing from there. The outcome of the trial “might pose a threat” to Archie’s relationship with Veronica (Camila Mendes), but there’s no surprise there—considering her father is out for blood.

Also, a cult is coming to town so, there’s that.

There will be “a couple of different mysteries that sort of crisscross as the season goes,” said Aguirre-Sacasa. “Cults felt very zeitgeist-y, and very relevant to Riverdale.”

Season three premieres on Wednesday, October 10 on The CW. Scroll down to see new photos from the season premiere, “Labor Day,” next month.
