The third installment in the Sherlock Holmes movie franchise will premiere on Dec. 21 2021, instead of Christmas Day 2020.
The Warner Bros.’ film doesn’t have a director yet, but Susan Downey, Joel Silver, and Lionel Wigram are producing the movie. Writer and producer Chris Brancato (Narcos, NBC’s Hannibal) penned the script for Sherlock Holmes 3.
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will return for sleuthing as the British detective and his sidekick Dr. Watson. They are reuniting 10 years after the sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, hit theaters. The second film scored $545.4 million in the worldwide box office.
The first Sherlock Holmes debuted in 2009 and earned $524 million worldwide. Guy Ritchie directed the first two Sherlock Holmes movies.
Downey Jr. and Law dropped teasers for Sherlock Holmes 3 in August 2018.
Law tells Entertainment Weekly, “We hope to propel the story forward. As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine — since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them — we’re going to play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.”
Downey Jr.’s teaser was a little less serious to get fans excited for the new adventure.
