Some of your favorite Sony video games may be heading to the big screen (or at least to TV) soon.
Today, Sony launched PlayStation Productions, a production studio that will develop shows and movies from the company’s existing video game catalog.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, the studio has already started work on its first slate of productions.
Sony has more than 100 games in its library, including Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Uncharted, and God of War.
PlayStation Productions will partner with Sony Pictures, giving the studio as much time as needed to develop the titles. “We don’t have to rush to market,” Shawn Layden, the head of the new studio, told THR. “We don’t have a list of ‘X number of titles must be done in this year.’ None of that. The company has been very accommodating to our ambition around this, to grow this in a measured, thoughtful way.”
Traditionally, video game movies have struggled with box office success. However, with the recent success of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, perhaps we are entering a new era.
