Ryan Coogler is back with his first project since directing the summer blockbuster Black Panther, and this time he’s joining forces with LeBron James to product to the highly-anticipated sequel to Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes’ Space Jam.
Production on the Warner Bros. film is currently set for 2019, during the NBA off-season. The flick will see James star in his first role since his supporting character appeared in the comedy Trainwreck.
Coogler is quite the grab for the sequel, with past works that include Creed and Fruitvale Station. Black Panther broke ground as a superhero film told from a black perspective and a heavy black cast, but it’s also had major financial success, grossing a whopping $1.34 billion worldwide. Yes, billion.
This isn’t the first news we’ve heard about a Space Jam sequel, but it is the most significant to date. The film’s gathering of momentum is due in part to James’ move to Los Angeles, where he’s currently striving for greatness in Hollywood film and TV. In fact, just last week, NBC and The CW both announced separate shows in development with James’ company, SpringHill Entertainment.
