The Oscar nominee, Thor reshaper, and bounty hunting droid might be directing the next Star Wars film.
While the Star Wars theatrical universe is set to take a break now that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been released, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that Lucasfilm is very interested in tapping Taika Waititi to helm its next story in a galaxy far, far away.
The New Zealand-born director already has a working relationship with Disney, having previously worked closely on Thor: Ragnarok with Marvel President Kevin Feige, who now occupies a seat as the future producer of an unannounced Star Wars project at Lucasfilm, as well. Waititi voiced the robot IG-11 on and directed the final episode of the first season of The Mandalorian, the Star Wars live-action series that propelled Disney+ subscriptions onto our bank statements and Baby Yoda into our hearts.
The Mandalorian has become a trial ground of sorts for directors entering the Star Wars sphere. Deborah Chow, director of two episodes of the bounty hunter series, is now leading the charge as the director of the streaming platform’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor.
As to when — and if — this arrangement comes to be, timing will be one of the biggest factors. Waititi is already set to direct the next Thor installment, Thor: Love and Thunder, for a November 2021 release date, and has his hands in Warner Bros.’ Akira adaptation.
