Following Ruby Rose’s debut as the bat heroine during The CW’s “Elseworlds” Arrowverse crossover, the network officially ordered a pilot of the previously announced series.
Batwoman, helmed by showrunner and writer Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) and executive producer Greg Berlanti, will star Rose as the masked hero after her appearance alongside Arrowverse favorites in Gotham City in the December crossover episodes. It was also announced that the episode, written by Dries, will be directed by David Nutter (Game of Thrones, The Flash).
The superhero series breaks barriers, with Batwoman becoming the first superhero series to be lead by a lesbian character—portrayed by the openly gay actress Rose.
The network previously released an official logline for the new series: “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane [Rose] soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
The drama, first developed in July, is The CW’s first official pilot order of the season and is under consideration for a series order for next season. We’ll be waiting by the Bat Phone for any announcements.
