The Liberator, a new World War II-era animated series coming to Netflix, will look like a graphic novel that came to life.

The four-part series, based on Alex Kershaw’s book The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-Day Odyssey, will be the first series to use a new technology called Trioscope Enhanced Hybrid Animation. The process combines CGI effects and live-action footage to create the graphic novel feel.

Grzegorz Jonkajtys (Pan’s Labyrinth , Pacific Rim, The Revenant) and L.C. Crowley from the Atlanta animation studio School of Humans created Trioscope.

The series will follow a U.S. Army officer from Oklahoma named Felix Sparks as he fights the Nazis in Europe. The plot follows his troop, made up of cowboys, Native Americans, and Mexican-Americans, from the invasion of Italy through the liberation of Dachau.

Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive) created and wrote The Liberator, and Jonkajtys is set to direct. A+E Studios and School of Humans will handle production. There’s no set release date at this time.
