It’s officially official—To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Netflix’s popular teen rom-com, is getting a sequel.
There were reports that a sequel was in the works, but the streaming service officially announced the movie yesterday with a Christmas-themed video starring Lana Candor and Noah Centineo, the movie’s lead actors.
Appearing as themselves, Candor and Centineo FaceTime and discuss making a “Christmas Contract.” (If you don’t get why that’s cute, go watch the first movie.) As one of her terms, Candor gets to tell the fans the big secret: To All the Boys is officially getting a sequel.
Then, she hangs up and accepts a call from a mystery person. She says, “You’re going to make the perfect John Ambrose.”
This refers to a character that is mentioned in the first movie, but only seen momentarily in a post-credits scene. This likely indicates that John Ambrose will come back into protagonist Lara Jean’s life in the sequel, like he does in the second novel in Jenny Han’s young adult series, which the movies are based on.
Netflix also released an official statement (in love letter form, of course), which reads:
“To All the Fans I’ve Loved Before—I miss you. I know it’s only been a few months and I swear I wasn’t trying to avoid you; I just didn’t know how to answer your question without lying to you. The truth isn’t always simple or straightforward—and as we all know too well, dating contracts have a way of quickly getting complicated. But, the letters are out… it’s true. A To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel is coming to Netflix. And yes, you can seamlessly continue to run your #Covinsky fan accounts because your dreamy stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo are in on it, too. So let’s do this. I promise the next chapter will be worth the wait! Love, Netflix”
Sofia Alvarez will also return to write the script for the sequel.
Now all we need is a release date!
