Tom and Jerry Live-Action Animation Hybrid in Development

Tom and Jerry’s classic cat-and-mouse chase is coming to the big screen and taking place in the real world.

Tim Story (Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer) is set to direct the film from Warner Bros.’ Warner Animation Group. The movie, scheduled to start shooting in 2019, will include real-world footage with an animated Tom and Jerry added in—think along the lines of Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Space Jam.

There isn’t any casting news about the dynamic duo, and there reportedly won’t be. The two main characters will, as usual, primarily communicate with physical comedy and won’t be voiced.

According to a Variety exclusive, Warner Animation Group has some other big projects coming down the pipeline. Ryan Coogler‘s Space Jam sequel, another live-action hybrid, is also filming next year, and the studio is developing a Wile E. Coyote vs. ACME hybrid.

In terms of fully animated features, the studio has tapped Chris Columbus (Harry Potter) to be creative producer for a new Scooby-Doo film. It has an expected release date in the first quarter of 2020.

Additional planed features include The Cat in the Hat, The Jetsons, The Flinstones, and a Lego Movie sequel.
