Star Trek: The Animated Series

Star Trek is being upgraded for a whole new generation.

That’s the idea behind a new animated Star Trek series from the Emmy Award-winning duo of Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters, LEGO Ninjago). Nickelodeon and CBS Television Studios gave the green light for the new CG-animated series, which will follow “a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning, and salvation.” It will debut exclusively on Nickelodeon, though no date has been announced.

The new series will be from CBS’ new animation arm Eye Animation Productions, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers alongside the Hagemans. Aaron Baiers will serve as a co-executive producer.

“Star Trek’s mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future,” Kurtzman says. “Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honors its exploratory spirit in a way that’s never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing ‘Trek’ to a younger generation around the world.”

“Star Trek, Nickelodeon, and the state of animation are doing incredibly ambitious things as of late. We couldn’t be more excited to jump aboard,” Dan and Kevin Hageman add.

The original Star Trek: The Animated Series (pictured top) followed the original crew of The Enterprise, airing from 1973-74 on NBC prior to finding a bigger audience on home video and, recently, Netflix.

Another animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks, will stream on CBS All Access.
