will smith deadshot

Will Smith, who played Deadshot in the first Suicide Squad film, reportedly won’t reprise his role in the franchise’s sequel. Smith’s exit is thought to be due to scheduling conflicts, which isn’t surprising. (He’s got Aladdin, Gemini Man, Bad Boys for Life, and Bright 2 on his plate, after all.)

While this may seem like a blow, the rest of the cast also has yet to confirm they’ll be returning, though it’s likely Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) will be back, considering she’s currently shooting a Quinn-centric spin-off.

Despite the uncertainty, Variety reports that writer and director James Gunn hopes to start production this fall. The original film brought in $746 million at the box office, so it’s not hard to guess why the studio reportedly remains excited about the sequel.

The movie is set to release on Aug. 6, 2021.
