Time to head back to Atlantis!
It’s official. The previously announced Aquaman sequel is booked for a release date of Dec. 12, 2022. And while that date is some three years away, the Warner Bros. film is the first titled film slated for release that weekend.
The studio will bring back David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to pen the script and Aquaman director James Wan and Peter Safran to produce.
Since the first film’s impressive debut with a $68.7 million gross on opening weekend and $1.1 billion worldwide, it was clear a sequel was always a possibility, given the success of the DC origin story and the flick becoming the studio’s highest-grossing DC film.
The Aquaman 2 sequel joins several other DC films on the calendar, including Shazam! and Joker in 2019, Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020, DC Super Pets, The Batman, and The Suicide Squad in 2021.
Warner Bros. and DC also announced a spinoff film, The Trench, that will follow the newbie DC Comics character who appeared briefly in the first film attacking Jason Momoa and Amber Heard’s superhero alter-egos. The spinoff will be produced by Wan and Safran and written by screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, however no further casting or plot details have been announced.
