Have you ever thought about what Pikachu would look like IRL?
The first trailer for Detective Pikachu, the first live-action Pokémon movie, is out with Ryan Reynolds voicing the adorable rosy-cheeked Pikachu. The movie, directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps), follows 21-year-old aspiring Pokémon trainer Tim (Justice Smith) as he searches for his missing detective father with the help of Detective Pikachu. The film takes place in Ryme City, a live-action world where humans and Pokémon live in harmony.
Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird) plays Lucy, a junior reporter chasing her first big story, and Ken Watanabe (Godzilla) plays Lieutenant Yoshida.
Pikachu is no longer limited to the phrase, “pika pika!” He can now speak—and can even crack jokes—although only certain people can understand him, and the main character Tim happens to be one of them. Fans will also get a glimpse at other famous Pokémon characters in the trailer, including Bulbasaur, Jigglypuff, Charizard, and Mr. Mime.
Fan reactions are a mixed bag, with with people obsessed and horrified with the live-action interpretation:
