He may have created Game of Thrones‘ ruthless continent of Westeros, where things are settled with swords and dragons, but George R.R. Martin encourages fans to use a more powerful weapon, their ballots, to “get rid of a bad king.”

In a brief video posted Sunday, Martin called on his fans to vote in today’s mid-term elections, saying:

“You know, I created the world of Westeros, but I’m glad I live in the United States of America. Because in Westeros, to get rid of a bad king, you need dragons, but here, in the United States, we have something more powerful: the ballot. Get out and vote.”

Martin also replaced the header on his Twitter page with a GOT-styled image that reads, “Fear cuts deeper than swords: Vote Tuesday the 6th.”
