New tales of Westeros are coming — but not for a few winters, unfortunately.
House of the Dragon, the new prequel to HBO’s hit Game of Thrones, is set for a 2022 launch, according to HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys in an interview with Deadline. He was keen on clarifying that the release date is only a guess, for the time being.
This series comes after HBO previously proposed a different Game of Thrones prequel, which was subsequently scrapped last November after shooting a pilot led by Naomi Watts. “In development, in pilots, sometimes things come together, sometimes they don’t,” Bloys says of the canned series, which was supposedly set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, a time-jump he called a “big swing.”
House of the Dragon is based on Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, set some 300 years prior to the flagship Emmy-winning series. The new show will delve into the origins of House Targaryen and is one of four proposed GoT spinoffs at the premium network, but it’s the only one currently given the greenlight.
“I think getting House of the Dragon on the air will be the number one priority,” Bloys says. He added that there is no casting news to reveal yet.
