Game of Thrones may be over, but that doesn’t mean HBO is done with Westeros yet. As we already know, there are a few GoT-adjacent projects in the works, including a prequel series that takes place about 5,000 years before.
Yesterday, in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, author George R.R. Martin — who is serving as an executive producer on the prequel — provided some new details about the show.
To start, Westeros won’t be divided into the Seven (or Six) Kingdoms. At this time in history, Martin says, the continent is divided into roughly 100 “petty kingdoms.” However, there will still be some house names that GoT fans recognize, including the Starks. Because the series is pre-Targaryen, there won’t be any dragons flying around. However, Martin says there will certainly be creatures, including direwolves, White Walkers, and mammoths. Another familiar family from GoT that won’t appear in the series is the Lannisters. Their family home, Casterly Rock, does exist, but it is still home to the Casterly family at this point in Westerosi history.
Actresses Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie, and Denise Gough are all set to star in the series, which Martin describes as an “ensemble story.” It will cover the time leading up to a confrontation with the White Walkers known as the Long Night. The pilot is currently in production and is still untitled.
