HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, has been given a 10-episode, straight-to-series order, the company announced at WarnerMedia Day. Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will partner as showrunners and executive producers, along with Martin and Vince Gerardis.
The show’s tagline, “Fire Will Reign,” seems to promise future CGI dragons — and maybe even a burning city or two. The series is based on Martin’s companion novel Fire & Blood, which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.
According to HBO programming president Casey Bloys, “the Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories. We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan, and George.”
Fans might remember director Sapochnik’s Emmy Award-winning episode of Game of Thrones, “Battle of The Bastards.” Sapochnik also directed six other episodes of Game of Thrones, episodes of HBO’s True Detective, a forthcoming film titled Bios for Amblin Studios, and Banshee for Cinemax. Condal’s prior HBO credits include Colony, where he was the series co-creator and showrunner for three seasons.
Although HBO Max is set to launch next May, the release date for House of the Dragon is still unknown. While they anxiously await the cast list, fans can brush up on their House Targaryen history by reading Martin’s Fire & Blood. Hopefully, by now, Game of Thrones fans know to expect the TV series to stray from the novel’s storyline.
Whatever they do, just give us more dragons.
