I’m sure some of us were super excited about the news of a possible sequel to the billion-dollar-grossing film Joker. Unfortunately, the sequel news that hit today is about as real as Gotham City

It’s great clickbait, but multiple inside sources stated that a possible sequel is an obvious eventuality due to the success of the film, but at this point, there are no deals for a sequel (huge bummer, I know). As of now, there haven’t been any negotiations with director Todd Phillips or his co-writer, Scott Silver, to develop one.

Sources added that a claim stating that Phillips met with Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich to pitch a portfolio of DC character origin stories is as false as stories about Martin Scorsese directing the first Joker; although Scorsese was originally going to be a producer, he dropped out because of his busy schedule. Multiple sources said that the meeting between Phillips and Emmerich never occurred and that Phillips doesn’t want to follow Joker by involving himself in other DC character films.

What he has talked about in interviews is that when Joker was initially being developed, there were discussions of a DC Black Label. He instead focused on Joker for the film – a great choice in my opinion. That discussion was a long time ago. Phillips has a track record of being very selective with the stories he tells. After The Hangover began breaking records for R-rated films, he did not attempt to turn his company into a comedy factory.

No one is saying a Joker sequel won’t happen. In fact, it’s very likely we’ll get a sequel to quench our thirst for more of our favorite homicidal maniac. Multiple sources said nothing has happened yet, and that Phillips and Silver have made no real moves to draft the rise of Joaquin Phoenix’s character. But, hey, don’t be too upset. We still have a great movie to watch over and over again. It’s not like we aren’t used to waiting years for new content – looking at you George Lucas.
