Attention Mean Girls fans, get ready to claim your movie theater seats!
According to Tina Fey, a movie adaptation based on the Broadway musical Mean Girls based on the film of the same name is on the way. Fey is the comedic genius behind both the original Mean Girls (2004) movie and the Tony-nominated musical Mean Girls (2017) based on the film.
The whole thing sounds a little meta (OK, a lot meta) but it makes sense when thinking of the other upcoming Broadway musical-to-screen adaptations such as West Side Story, In the Heights, and Come From Away (…and let’s just forget about the recent take on Cats).
Fans on twitter have some mixed reactions, and love to point out the meta-factor:
after the Mean Girls Musical movie they should make a Mean Girls musical movie musical.

“I’m very excited to bring ‘Mean Girls’ back to the big screen. It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences,” Fey said in a statement. “I’ve spent sixteen years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”
Paramount Pictures and Lorne Michaels (producers of the original film and musical) will return to produce with Fey, who will write the adapted film script alongside music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Stuart Thompson and Sonia Friedman also produced the musical and will produce the adapted film version as well.
The release date has not been announced yet, but it better be on a Wednesday because no matter what I’m wearing pink. How many times will I go and see this in theaters? The limit does not exist.
