After years of waiting, multiple film delays, and who knows how many reshoots, a fresh The New Mutants trailer has finally arrived! It’s a big deal for Marvel fans who have anxiously waited for new info on the highly anticipated American superhero-horror extravaganza. The movie takes a new, terrifying spin on the typical X-Men formula by developing a film that’s straight out of your worst nightmares.

The film is based on a comic developed by director Josh Boones and producer Knate Lee, who wanted to tell a story that was different from past mutant stories. In bone-chilling, horror fashion, the trailer opens up with five young mutants: Magik, Wolfsbane, Danielle Moonstar, Sunspot, and Cannonball. The all-star cast of heroes is held in a secret facility against their will by the mysterious Doctor Cecilia Reyes (played by Alice Braga). It’s revealed that each mutant has had a disastrous “first time,” each one having killed, hurt, or completely lost control when their abilities first manifested.

Under the guise of recovery and education, Doctor Reyes brings the mutants together to help them control their powers. The story takes a turn as darkness and evil plague the facility after Danielle Moonstar (portrayed by Blu Hunt) uncovers the true intentions of the facility: The doctors do not intend to help them recover; instead, they want to manifest each mutant’s greatest fears until it destroys them.

As far as I can tell, the movie looks like it’s going to be a hair-raiser. I didn’t realize I needed a movie about angsty, teenage mutants in a haunted house until I started following The New Mutants’ story. The official release date is set for April 3, so the wait is finally coming to an end. I think the trailer was awesome, but don’t just take my word for it! Twitter has been buzzing with hype.
