New York Comic Con (NYCC) got a serious case of spider fever this week.
Hundreds of fans suited up as Spider-Man for a Guinness World Records attempt organized by Jazwares and Disney Consumer Products, filling the Javits Center with enough web-slingers to make even the Spider-Verse look a little understaffed.
The goal was to break the record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Spider-Man, which currently stands at 685 participants.
The NYCC crowd came close — very close.
Organizers finished just 37 Spider-Men short of the mark, meaning 648 costumed fans turned out for the attempt.
No record this time, but the scene still delivered exactly what you’d want from a giant Spider-Man meetup: hundreds of masks, plenty of poses, and one seriously packed celebration of Marvel’s friendly neighborhood hero.
And really, gathering 648 Spider-Men in one place is still the kind of thing you only expect to see at NYCC.
But fear not, true believers! As a little spider may have let it slip to this intrepid Pop Insider reporter, a new web is spinning for another run at the title. Until then, 685 it is.
Now where’s Doc Ock?
