Go Go Power Rangers!
It seems that every generation gets its own reboot of the beloved ‘90s Power Rangers, whether it is in animated, live-action, or comic book form. This time, Paramount and Hasbro are partnering on a feature film, with TV director and filmmaker Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F*ing World) set to direct.
The live-action TV series, adapted from the Japanese series Super Sentai, originated in the early ‘90s and has since gone through a few changes in form and premise. The core storyline always revolves around a group of teenagers who morph into superheroes, each wearing their own colored uniforms (shout out to all the Pink Rangers). Since the original series, there have been three movies (1995, 1997, 2017), a slew of comic books, and more than 26 television seasons of 20 different themed series.
Hasbro, which acquired the franchise from creator Haim Saban last year, is using its production company Allspark Pictures to produce the film alongside Paramount. The new feature seems to be aiming at the original ‘90s fanbase, with the new movie’s premise including a time-travel element that brings the group of kids to the 1990s and back. Not going to lie, it makes me feel old that movies are using the ‘90s (aka my childhood) for the basis of time travel. Wasn’t it just yesterday that my brother and I were watching Power Rangers while sipping on Kool-Aid Jammers, taking care of our Furbies, and begging to go to Blockbuster?
