At Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC), Trekkies learned more about the new animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks during the Star Trek Universe panel.
Stars Tawny Newsome, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, and Jack Quaid have been cast as the new crew aboard the Starfleet. Newsome will play Ensign Mariner, Quaid will take on Ensign Boimler, Ensign Tendi will be voiced by Wells, and Ensign Rutherford will be voiced by Cordero. The series will focus on the support crew who is serving aboard one of the least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos.

According to the creative team during the panel, the franchise is expanding with the universe’s first foray into animation and brings “something weird” onto a newly designed Starfleet class of ships, the California class.
"Take all of that and add @MikeMcMahanTM and you've got something really weird." – @Alex_Kurtzman on #StarTrekLowerDecks 😂 #StarTrekSDCC
