The Duffer brothers, the creators of Netflix’s Stranger Things, were about to go to trial against filmmaker Charles Kessler, who claimed that the brothers plagiarized the origin of the show from him — but the case was thrown out yesterday before it hit the courts.
Kessler withdrew his damages suit and said in a statement: “After hearing the deposition testimony this week of the legal expert I hired, it is now apparent to me that, whatever I may have believed in the past, my work had nothing to do with the creation of Stranger Things.”
Kessler originally claimed that he pitched the concept of the show to the Duffer brothers at a 2014 Tribeca Film Festival party and also gave them a script, ideas, the story, and film.
There were similarities between Kessler’s script and Stranger Things, including a missing boy, a nearby military base conducting experiments on kids, and a monster from another dimension, according to Deadline.
After the case was thrown out, Netflix released a statement: “We are glad to be able to put this baseless lawsuit behind us. As we have said all along, Stranger Things is a ground-breaking original creation by the Duffer brothers.”
