All you need is love Disney, apparently.
Walt Disney Studios officially acquired distribution rights to The Beatles: Get Back, a previously announced, feature-length documentary from Peter Jackson that covers the making of the album Let it Be and The Beatles’ final concert as a group on the rooftop of London’s Savile Row.
Today at Disney’s annual shareholder’s meeting, Executive Chairman Bob Iger announced that the documentary is set to debut globally in theaters this September, specifically on Sept. 4 in the U.S.
The documentary is compiled from more than 55 hours of restored, unseen footage from 1969 and 140 hours of audio recordings from the Let It Be album sessions. According to Disney, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Lennon, and Olivia Harrison all support the new documentary.
All of the footage used in this documentary was originally shot for Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s Let It Be film, which debuted in 1970 — just three weeks after The Beatles officially disbanded. A fully restored version of this original film will also be available at a later date.
Starr says that he thinks Jackson’s production will be more representative of the band than the original Let It Be. “ Peter is great and it was so cool looking at all this footage,” he says. “There was hours and hours of us just laughing and playing music, not at all like the version that came out. There was a lot of joy, and I think Peter will show that. I think this version will be a lot more peace and loving, like we really were.”
