I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie is in early talks to take on the live-action Cruella de Vil film, Cruella.

Oscar winner Emma Stone is set to star as the dog-hating Disney villain for the film, an origin story about the iconic character. Alex Timbers was previously on board to direct, but he ran into scheduling conflicts with two other theater productions debuting on Broadway next year, Moulin Rouge and Beetlejuice.

The film is billed as an “origin story set in the early 1980s with a punk vibe.”

Gillespie’s I, Tonya earned star Margot Robbie an Oscar nomination and Allison Janney an Oscar win. He has plenty of experience with Disney, directing The Finest Hours and Million Dollar Arm for the studio, as well as the projects Fright Night and Lars and the Real Girl.
