Disney’s upcoming streaming service officially has a name, and it’s not called Disneyflix. Say hello to Disney+.
Disney+ will launch late next year after Disney pulled most of its movies from Netflix. The service will feature new content, including original shows and movies. Marvel character Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, will get an original series. There will also be a Rogue One prequel series about Star Wars character Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna.
Subscribers will also get a reboot of the High School Musical franchise and more animated content, including the next season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and a new original animated series based on Pixar’s Monsters Inc. Disney+’s original movies will include Noel, a Christmas movie about Santa’s daughter played by Anna Kendrick, and Togo, a movie about the 1925 Nome Serum Run starring William DaFoe.
Following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox for $52 billion, the company will also have a majority stake in Hulu. NBC Universal still owns 30 percent, and WarnerMedia owns 10 percent. Hulu will release more original content similar to The Handmaid’s Tale, so between that and the plans for Disney+, Netflix is in for some fierce competition.
