We don’t know too much about the second Suicide Squad movie at this point. Will Smith is out, Idris Elba may be in, and James Gunn is still at the helm, despite Disney re-hiring him for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
One thing we do know now — thanks to an interview on JoBlo.com with Aquaman and Shazam! producer Peter Safran — is that we’ve been calling it the wrong name.
According to Safran, the studio calls the movie The Suicide Squad, not Suicide Squad 2. Safran makes this distinction because the movie is a “total reboot,” not a sequel.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, since the first movie just came out in 2016, and some members of the original cast plan to return. However, Safran says fans should be excited about the new movie.
“It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script, and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot,” he says. “And I know that we will deliver a lot.”
The movie is scheduled to begin production in September, with a release set for Aug. 6, 2021.
